Cape Grace Hotel: Preserving a Design Icon Through Thoughtful Hardware Specification
Few hotels hold the status and heritage of Cape Grace.
Situated on Cape Town's iconic V&A Waterfront, the hotel has long been recognised for its exceptional guest experience, timeless character, and connection to South African culture. Following the most extensive refurbishment in its history, the landmark property reopened in 2024 with a renewed identity that carefully balances contemporary luxury with the heritage that made it an international destination.
Working alongside 1508 London’s Dubai Studio, Consort Architectural Hardware was commissioned to deliver a complete ironmongery specification capable of supporting both the project's ambitious design vision and the operational demands of a world-class hospitality environment.

A Design Rooted in Place
The refurbishment extended throughout the property, encompassing 112 guestrooms and suites, public areas, hospitality spaces, the spa, swimming pool, and the renowned Bascule Bar. Every design decision was influenced by Cape Town's landscape, culture, and craftsmanship, creating an immersive experience that feels inherently connected to its surroundings.
"The Cape Grace had a strong identity long before we arrived and our role was to honour that rather than reinvent it. Celebrating South African heritage was central to every design choice, from the palette and materials through to the hardware. Consort's ironmongery felt like a natural extension of that thinking. The consistency of finish and quality across every doorset gave the project a coherence that really tied the design together, and felt true to the spirit of the building." - Myriam Raad, Interior Designer, 1508 London
For Consort, the challenge was to ensure every hardware element contributed to this vision while delivering the durability, compliance, and performance expected within a luxury hospitality setting.
Balancing Performance with Design
Luxury hotels place unique demands on architectural hardware. Products must withstand intensive daily use while maintaining the quality and appearance expected by guests.
To meet these requirements, Consort supplied premium EN 1906 Grade 4 certified lever handle sets, high-performance lock cases, concealed hinges, concealed door closers, and a bespoke multi-profile master key system tailored to the hotel's operational hierarchy.
By integrating concealed hardware wherever possible, the design team was able to preserve clean architectural lines throughout the project, allowing visible ironmongery elements to become considered design features rather than purely functional components.
The resulting specification delivers long-term durability, fire safety compliance, and operational efficiency without compromising the refined aesthetic of the interior scheme.

Creating a Cohesive Material Palette
The hotel's renewed identity is defined by texture, craftsmanship, and materiality.
Satin PVD Gold and Brass finishes were selected to complement the wider interior palette, harmonising with timber veneers, local artworks, and carefully curated finishes throughout the property. Knurled detailing and grained cast pull handles were introduced to reinforce the tactile qualities present throughout the design, creating a subtle but consistent thread across guest rooms and public spaces.
Rather than drawing attention away from the architecture, the hardware was designed to feel fully integrated into the guest experience, contributing to a sense of quality and permanence throughout the building.
Designed for Long-Term Performance
Alongside aesthetics and functionality, sustainability formed an important part of the specification strategy.
Hardware components were selected based on proven durability and lifecycle performance, helping to reduce replacement cycles and minimise long-term environmental impact. Consort's in-house PVD finishing process provides exceptional surface resilience while eliminating the hazardous solvents commonly associated with traditional plated finishes. Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) were also available across key product ranges, supporting transparency throughout the specification process.
Award-Winning Specification
The success of the Cape Grace refurbishment has since been recognised by the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers Specification Awards, where the project received recognition within the International category.
For Consort, the project represents more than a successful hardware specification. It demonstrates how architectural ironmongery can contribute meaningfully to a design narrative, helping preserve the identity of an iconic building while delivering the performance, safety, and longevity required for modern hospitality environments.
